Strengthening New Zealand’s eligibility settings for citizenship grant

Citizenship test update from Department of Internal Affairs.

Future changes to citizenship by grant process announced - A citizenship test will be introduced from late 2027

The Minister of Internal Affairs recently announced that a citizenship test will be introduced from late 2027 as part of the citizenship by grant process.

The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) is preparing to put this change into practice. There is currently no change to the citizenship by grant process and applicants must still meet current eligibility requirements.

More detail about the future change is available on the NZ Government website:

DIA will share details about the citizenship test as they do more work.

This will include how to take the test, who does not need to sit it, the cost, and when it will become required.
