Newsletter #3

4 April 2008

With only a month to go before the Authority opens for business, the pace is certainly picking up. Here are a few more milestones we’ve reached since March.

Assessment trial complete

Last month, our Industry Reference Group, together with a number of other Advisers both on and off-shore, helped us run a trial of our assessment procedures. Feedback was largely positive, indicating that our assessments are pitched at the right level and fit for purpose. A few issues were raised about the clarity of questions, time involved in applying, and document readability. All of these will be considered as we finalise our assessment documentation. Industry input has been essential to making these assessments work well for everyone, and my thanks to all who took part in this trial.

Employers and activity information

As part of our assessment, the Authority may ask an Adviser’s employer to provide activity information for individual Advisers (INZ cannot currently supply this). We hope this will not cause undue inconvenience and look forward to your cooperation.

Licence fees set

In line with earlier projections, the total cost for a licence has been set at $1,995 (incl gst). This is made up of a licensing fee ($890) and a levy ($1,105). Licence upgrade fees will be $535.00 (incl gst). Advisers who meet the not-for-profit criteria will not be charged fees or levies. These criteria are currently being developed.

The licence fee covers the cost of processing all applications, while the levy covers the cost of funding the Tribunal and the Authority’s non-application related functions.

The licence renewal fee has not yet been set. To calculate it, we will need information about numbers of Advisers and actual application processing costs. This will not be available until later this year, but we will update you once the fee has been set.

Application workshops—some spaces still available

There’s still room for a few more people to take part in our licence application workshops in Invercargill (27 May), Dunedin (28 May), Auckland (30 May, 1.30pm) and Hamilton (6 June). If you are interested in attending one of these, please contact the Authority at info@iaa.govt.nz or PO Box 6222, Auckland 1141.

These workshops will work through the application process in detail, including outlining information requirements and clarifying any issues.

Contact us

As always, feel free to contact us at info@iaa.govt.nz, freephone 0508 IAA IAA (0508 422 422 — New Zealand only) or write to us at PO Box 6222, Wellesley St, Auckland, New Zealand.

Otherwise, you’ll hear from me again next month.
