Trans-Tasman licensing

All agents registered with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) in Australia must also hold a New Zealand immigration advisers licence if they wish to provide New Zealand immigration advice.

If you are an Australian registered migration agent you can only apply for a New Zealand licence using the process set out in the Trans Tasman Mutual Recognition Arrangement (TTMRA).

The TTMRA recognises Australia’s regulatory standards regarding equivalent-registered occupations and streamlines the licensing process for Australian registered migration agents.

TTMRA licence applicants will not be tested on their understanding of New Zealand immigration matters before being granted a licence. However, advisers and agents licensed under the TTMRA must comply with the New Zealand Licensed Immigration Advisers Code of Conduct.

The Registrar will decide your application within one month of the date of receipt. The licence is for individuals and not companies.

Steps to apply

  1. Read our Trans-Tasman Recognition Policy.
  2. Complete the form Form 401: Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act 1997 Application.
